Nicole Shanks

Artist Statement

My work seems to find it's way back to the kitchen no matter what the design. I have explored sculptural ideas and painterly qualities with my forms but function always sneaks it way in. Food looks more beautiful in a dish made for it.

My current body of work is on its way, and I am in the process of creating a catalogue of work that will find it's way back to the kitchen once more. My new line of work is keeping it simple! No need for flashy colors or detailed brush strokes. This line is inspired by the herbs we cook with and the dishes we devour among family and friends. I am creating pottery that gets it colors from the food and it's function from the cusine.

So, pull a chair, grab a cup for wine, or a mug of coffee. Smell the spices you pinch from the dish, and feel the handmade texture of  the vessels that hold the tasty treats you are about to receive, and savor the simplicity.
