I believe that the ultimate goal of my work is empathy. When I look at the subjects that I paint, I can feel that there is another universe inside of them. It doesn't matter if it is a person, an animal, an insect, they are all the center of their existence. The universe surrounds them as they perceive it, in synapse and spark, and I strive to communicate their world with color and form. When someone looks at my work, and they feel the emotion, the energy that was inside that person or animal, their universes are momentarily connected. A brief, tenuous tether of shared understanding that brings us closer, not just to each other, but to nature as well. There is an otherworldly brilliance that is all around us, in every insect, in the breathtaking geometry of every leaf, and sometimes the emotion I hope to convey is my own wonder at these things. The desire to capture that intricacy causes me to strive for realism in my work, and I use my time in the studio as a form of meditation where I allow myself to paint what I actually see, and not what my brain tries to impose should be there. My hope is that in doing so my work can inspire the same appreciation and empathy that I carry in my heart for my version of the world we share.
